Hell Week 2 in full swing

deadpoolshrug_1024x1024

Sorry, kids. No comics today. The little time I had for reading was spent with James, Lars, Dave, and Ron — Metallica before they became the Metallica. Considering how preoccupied I am with Mick Wall’s biography of the band, I doubt I can spend much time with my comics backlog in the next few days.

And I’m also busy with work. Sick workmates mean double workload. Perhaps even OT, or weekend duty. Fuck that shit.

Can’t even summon the energy to yak about today. Except that I dropped by Powerbooks in Trinoma (since I was also on an errand there) and scored three Image Comics — Shutter Vols. 1 and 2, Manifest Destiny Vol. 1 and Copperhead Vol. 1.

Morbid Monday

deadpool_vol_3_4_moore_variantWith over a dozen new additions to my stack of TPBs and HCs courtesy of that damn Powerbooks’ clearance sale, I figured I should start reading them ASAP. So last Saturday, in the middle of reading frenzy, I cracked open Deadpool: Dead Presidents. It’s a slim book, consisting only of six issues, and I could’ve finished it in one sitting if I wanted to, but I didn’t. Something came up, namely Mick Wall’s Enter Night: A Biography of Metallica. So today I picked up from where I left off. One word to describe this book: insane. And I love it!

Perhaps it was the gloominess of Monday, but I was dark today. Like, heavy metal dark. Walking from my mother’s place to our house, a good half-kilometer walk, more or less, I thought I’d be comfortable killing myself at that very moment. (Take note: comfortable, not eager. Worlds apart.) In my mind I was already composing a note, with perhaps the best last paragraph I could think of to leave the world by. I was not troubled by the thought; in fact, I was kind of amused by it. Like I was about to do a little mischief to annoy the neighbors. Leave the bastards scratching their heads.

But nothing happened. I am writing this now, after all, with my head decidedly clearer.

Perhaps it was just a stray thought that lingered longer than it should. Still, I am not taking it lightly…

Weekend report 0005

comics

The last week of the month is the week most of the comics series I’m following come out, so naturally it leads to the busiest weekend as far as reading comics is concerned. During such weekend, morning would usually find me on our balcony, alone, with the latest issues spread out before me, to be read one by one as I enjoy the day’s first mug of coffee (I usually consume 2 or 3 a day). By the time the sun is totally up, I’d be done with the latest issues, feeling good, and very much looking forward to the day.

Had a productive weekend. And when I say productive I mean I was able to cover the important bases — I was able to watch a movie (Reign of Supermen), finished a TV series (The Punisher), and read a lot. There was also a trip to the barbershop and the gym and dinner with my second family at Romeo’s Spice and Steaks.

It was all good and swell… until I received bad news from work. Apparently, next week will be Hell Week’s sequel.

First day of Feb is fab

new_avengers_vol_2_6Not much comic-reading happened today. I just read the two issues that complete Vol. 1 of the New Avengers (2010) TPB, and that was it. Reading time was spent mostly with Denis Johnson’s Nobody Move, which I finished today.  Something about finishing a book on the first day of a month makes me want to pat myself on the back. And if it lands on a Friday, like today, it makes for a double celebration. Sort of.

Speaking of Friday, today had been an extraordinary one. Work was light, the afternoon rush hour line of passengers at the Cubao terminal was long but moving fast, and I was home and already enjoying my weekend a little past 6 p.m. The wifey was there, as she was allowed to work remotely for the day, and together with the kiddo, whose grades improved during the third grading based on her report card, we had a cozy dinner at Coffee Project. It was a chilly night outside but inside it was warm. The smell of coffee soothed my nostrils, and I found myself feeling relaxed for the first time in seven days. Thought it was a good night to be with my family after the workweek I’ve been through.

Back home I watched two The Punisher episodes on Netflix and then went to bed thinking, What a way to start February.

Lost my self-control again

728766._sx1280_ql80_ttd_The new Guardians of the Galaxy is off to a  roaring start. Thanos is dead, but not really — you just can’t put a good villain down (just ask Juan Ponce Enrile). Meanwhile, en route to Knowhere, trouble finds Peter Quill and Groot, prompting Quill to form a new team of cosmic misfits. And then to spice things up, Thanos’ former cronies, the Black Order, sent on a mission here to retrieve the Mad Titan’s headless body, now serve a new master.

To me, this has all the makings of a future classic. Issue #2 can’t drop soon enough.

In other news: splurged on TPBs again today (damn you, Powerbooks, damn you to hell!). The plan was to check out the branch in Shangri-La Plaza Mall and spent P500 on two or three TPBs. Somewhere between plan and execution, however, something went wrong, because I ended up spending a little over P1,000 for eight TPBs. Indeed, when it comes to the things I like, me and self-control don’t get along well.

Now, not only my to-read pile has increased significantly, but I’m neck-deep in credit card debt, something that makes me uncomfortable. I’m reminded of a Charles Bukowski wisdom: “Find something you love and let it kill you.” Sometimes, it’s the boozers that make sense.

And with that, I say sayonara to January.

Alert, alive, awake, enthusiastic

amcar_03_300-001_hd_5c33e6efb41259.02105865I was busy, if not excitedly, unwrapping and leafing through the TPBs and HCs I scored yesterday when I realized I haven’t read the third issue of American Carnage that was released last week. So I dug it from my to-read pile and made it my bedtime reading today.

The series seems to have slowed down a bit on this third installment, but it’s still moving in the right direction, and I’m still looking forward to reading the fourth issue. It’s actually one of my favorite series currently running.

Was surprisingly bouncy today. Perhaps it was the cool weather. I’ve always liked this season even though it makes taking a bath in the wee hours a punishing ordeal even with heated water. Or perhaps it was the latest additions to my comic book collection courtesy of Powerbooks (I’m a man of simple joys, and new comics are enough to excite me to no end). Or perhaps it is simply the chemicals in my brain functioning right for a change. Whatever. I don’t usually find myself in this kind of mood, so when I do, I savor it while it lasts.

Another 90s jamz today: Veruca Salt’s Eight Arms to Hold You.

Today I raised a finger to cost-cutting

comics

Failed to read a single comic book today; instead, I scored a bunch. And I mean a BUNCH.

See, last night I got wind that Powerbooks is having a month-long clearance sale in several of its branches, so today I woke up with a mission to check it out. Went to Powerbooks in Trinoma after work and was stunned at how low the prices of the trade paperbacks had gone down. I mean, they were so fucking cheap Powerbooks was practically giving them away! So I said fuck you to cost-cutting and splurged.

I went home with a haul — 11 TPBs/HCs for the price of two. As a bonus, I got Kim Gordon’s autobiography, Girl in a Band, for only P117.50, down from P1,175.00.  I think I was grinning from ear to ear even in my sleep.

Start of Hell Week is… hellish

new_avengers_vol_2_1Got started on Brian Michael Bendis’ run of New Avengers today. Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine — what’s not to like? I hope the story arc is as good as the cast. Bendis is kind of a hit-or-miss guy for me.

Day One of Hell Week — busy as fuck in the morning, what with senatorial radio interviews and Pepe Smith croaking, not to mention all the presscons and statements about yesterday’s twin bombings in a Jolo cathedral. It almost made me want to quit, troop to a nearby fancy bar, order a tequila, and drunk-flirt with Krey Trajano on Instagram.

But the afternoon was a different beast. Desk reinforcements came and I withdrew to the backseat where I stayed until it was time to punch out and call it a day.

Dropped by my mother’s place before going home. She was in a bright mood and not complaining about anything except the cold weather. At least there was that.

Tomorrow I face Day Two.

Weekend report 0004

81dgbmpvp-lFinally, I got to read Kingdom Come. I agree with the hype: it’s not just one of the best Justice League stories ever written, but actually one of the best superhero stories ever. And as icing on the cake, there’s that glorious Alex Ross art to please the eye. Amazing story, kick-ass art — if this is not perfection, then nothing is.

Anyway, about the weekend: bad news and good.

Saturday started okay. The morning was cold, the air pleasant and tasted clean and innocent. I was up before 5 a.m. and watched a Punisher episode in the dark before coffee, and was looking forward to the day. Then mid-morning while I was doing a little laundry I got a text message informing me that a workmate is down with the flu, and that I will carry her workload for the week. Suddenly I was looking at a long workweek ahead, which actually made me dread Monday even more. Shit.

Worse, the news also made me feel shitty while attending the Star Wars-themed family day at my daughter’s school in the afternoon.

But then Sunday the pendulum swung: our visas for our Planned Big Trip in April have been approved. So, unless something really bad happens between today and the day of our departure, we’ll be seeing Cherry Blossoms in two months’ time. All I need to do now is save cash, stay healthy, and survive these predictably rotten workweeks ahead of me.

Thank God it’s Friday

hellblazer_vol_1_35Hellblazer #35 is a peek into John Constantine’s childhood… and what a grim childhood he had! The title alone, “Dead Boy’s Heart,” doesn’t give much about optimism. I read it with caution. It’s Friday, after all. No room for bad vibes. Thoughts should be on parties, the weekend plan, friends, escapism… certainly not on strange men, bullies, and dead kids found in desolate quarries with their hearts still intact.

Indeed, Dangerous Habits — Volume 5 of the Hellblazer series — is, I think, a tough book to read in one sitting. And I’m not talking about its bulk.

And so much for dark themes.

Surprisingly light workload at the office today (exact opposite of yesterday). Light, but not entirely wholesome. It’s the usual stories on idiots getting busted for drugs, politicians talking bullshit, a pretty coed who supposedly overdosed on drugs during the Sinulog Festival in Cebu last week, not to mention the sad little murders and rapes and abuses. All these made me feel I just traded one darkness to another. At least the other one was fiction, and the protagonist is a cool bastard.

At home, I celebrated the death of another workweek with The Punisher season 2 episodes.
